This year’s Asian open, which has a prize purse of $2.3 million, will be held at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club from April 24th to 27, and will be the first ever tri-sanctioned – Chinese Golf Association, Asian Tour, and European Tour – event in China.

Ron Dennis, Team Principal of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and Chairman and CEO of McLaren Group, will be giving a Keynote Address. He said: “Everyone connected with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, and all who work in and with the McLaren Group, in which the Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company is an active and enthusiastic shareholder, is immensely excited about the many opportunities that the region offers. I’m therefore delighted to have been invited to deliver a keynote address to the inaugural Motor Sport Business Forum Middle East.”

The Middle East Forum, which will be held at the Bahrain International Circuit, the Home of Motor Sport in the Middle East, in the run-up to this year’s fifth running of the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand
Prix, has raised enormous interest throughout the region.

Talal Al Zain, Chairman of the Bahrain International Circuit, said: “This Forum is the first of its kind in the Middle East and we are delighted that so many companies from around the region are taking part in this opportunity. Like the Monaco version of the Forum, we have gathered a super line-up of speakers and I think that has provided enormous pulling power to generate interest from these companies as well as from those further afield.

“The Middle East has a large and vested interest in the motor sport industry. It is a major marketing platform and is a catalyst for creating greater awareness and profile the world over. Our agreement with IM2 to host the Forum gives us a significant networking opportunity where business interests can be developed amongst an elite motor sport and business delegation.”

Target audiences are increasingly disenchanted by ads and publicity and more and more unresponsive to commercial break. Can sports marketing hospitality represent a strategic tool for winning over new customers and enhance B2B relationships?

Sport, as a matter of fact, is capable of stirring up passions that bring together a varied audience, who can be reached in a targeted manner through a considered choice of the most appropriate discipline to represent a specific company or communicate a brand’s values.

The advantages of using sport do not end with communication towards the end user but are also expressed in the various forms of B2B Corporate Hospitality. In this context, a targeted, effective tool is provided by sport hospitality laid on at sporting events.

For example, in the context of championships with a high media profile, such as MotoGp, Superbike and Formula One, a sports hospitality program enables companies to offer both established and prospective customers an exclusive, spectacular experience, right at the heart of the competition on the world’s major circuits. In this way it becomes possible to manage B2B public relations in an informal, exciting setting, with the opportunity to establish more constructive understandings based on a shared enthusiasm for a particular competitor or team.

Thanks to dedicated sponsored spaces which can be entirely personalised with companies’ colours and logos, guests can watch the race from a privileged vantage point, with every convenience at their disposal, including a catering service of the highest quality and a hospitality service provided by friendly, professional staff.

B2B Sports Hospitality programs also include a series of parallel activities for the entertainment of guests during their time at the circuit. Of these, the most popular are the “Paddock Tour” which gives guests the chance to go “behind the scenes” of the race itself, visiting the places where riders or drivers work side by side with mechanics to bring the drama of the race to life, and the “Pit Lane Walk” in which it is possible, at specific times, to cross the pit lane to see the pits and what goes on in them from up close.

Activities of this kind represent the “added value” of a sports hospitality package as they enable guests to enter into direct contact with the heart of the event and to live experiences that money alone cannot buy. In addition, the emotional impact that such sporting events generates does not just leave participants with good memories but helps to enhance the image of the sponsoring company with positive values.

It extends the brand’s involvement with UEFA; it is already a sponsor of the Champions League.

The news comes as UEFA unveiled the full details of the centralised deal for the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup, which it says brings ‘far broader distribution of matches, better promotion, higher revenues and a prominent group of broadcaster and sponsor partners’.

The brands confirmed as sponsors include Carlsberg as presenting sponsor, Vodafone as technology sponsor, and Toyota, Intersport, Canon and Banco Santander as official sponsors of both club competitions.

UEFA has further developed the UEFA Cup brand with a new design for the final phase focusing on broadcast design elements and the in-stadia look.

UEFA director of marketing and media rights, Philippe Le Floc’h, said: “The UEFA Cup is an outstanding event with some of the best teams and players in the world competing for one of Europe’s most famous trophies. The feedback on the new centralised concept has been encouraging with many stakeholders welcoming UEFA’s vision including the clubs, broadcasters and sponsors.

“What has been encouraging in particular is the commitment of the broadcast and sponsor partners to the promotion of the competition, resulting in a significant increase in the availability of the matches to fans in Europe and across the globe. We look forward to working with our partners to further develop the UEFA Cup in the future.”

TEAM Marketing is the exclusive marketing partner of UEFA for the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

ANDREA DOVIZIOSO NEW ENDORSER OF ROTTERDAM INDUSTRY
THE YOUNG CHAMPION CHOSEN ON THE ADVICE OF RTR SPORTS MARKETING AND CSS STELLAR MANAGEMENT RTR, a leading sports marketing company is the promoter of the partnership between Andrea Dovizioso, world champion in the 125 class and star of the 250 cc class in the MotoGP Championship, and Rotterdam Industry.

The urban and street style clothing brand links up with Andrea, who perfectly embodies the youthful, original, charged-up spirit of the new collection. The Rotterdam Industry range is in fact aimed at the 12-to-20 age group that is wise to the quality, originality and vitality of the product.

Andrea will wear clothing from the new Rotterdam Industry collection in his free time and the image of the young champion on two wheels will be used in all the company’s communication materials.

As Riccardo Tafà, managing director of RTR Sports Marketing, explains: “Andrea Dovizioso is a young champion that young people can easily identify with and the Rotterdam Industry style lends itself perfectly to his fierce, vital spirit and his adrenalin-charged world.”

“Our company has to pay attention not just to the style requirements of our final customers, but also to their need for excitement,” points out Pierluigi Premoli, sales manager of Code Srl. “They have always favoured a certain kind of music (which explains the partnership with the radio station m2o – pure music) and they want to ride powerful motorbikes to turn their dreams of getting away into long rides in open spaces.”

Once again RTR Sports Marketing has been able to identify the endorser that suits the needs and requirements of its client, proving itself to be the ideal sports marketing agency for any company that intends to use sport as a marketing tool.

OM AND DUCATI CORSE: AN UNDERSTANDING THAT WORKS
Agreement between OM and Ducati Corse renewed for 2007 through RTR

OM, a leading manufacturer of forklift trucks and internal goods handling and transport systems, is once again official sponsor of the Ducati Corse team in 2007.

The deal, clinched thanks to the consulting services of RTR Sports Marketing, a premier agency in the field of sports marketing, has been renewed for the third year in a row, and is proof of the excellent understanding that has joined the two companies until now.

In its role as official sponsor, OM once again flanks the Ducati Corse team, competing in the Superbike and MotoGp World Championships. In the Superbike Championship 2007 which commenced recently, the company’s logo features on the bikes, racesuits and clothing of the Ducati Xerox Team, already world champions in 2006.

After Troy Bayliss’s first place in the Riders’ World Championship, Ducati rounded off the Superbike Championship of 2006 on a high note by taking the Constructors’ Championship on the Magny-Cours circuit in France. It was the fourteenth Superbike title in the Constructors’ Championship for the legendary bike manufacturer of Borgo Panigale, while for OM it promised a 2007 full of reasons to be satisfied.

Benefits for OM include the chance to utilize Ducati Corse’s name, reputation and image for its own communications activities, along with the opportunity to use the teams’ hospitality areas in both Superbike and MotoGp and to organise meetings in the prestigious setting of the Ducati Museum.

In the words of Riccardo Tafà, managing director of RTR: “The renewal of this agreement for the third year running is a source of great satisfaction for us, as it shows that the association between OM and Ducati Corse is now consolidated, having proven itself to be a winning choice for both partners.”

UK government officials have confirmed the budget to stage the 2012 Olympic Games in London has quadrupled from initial estimates.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell confirmed the cost of hosting the sporting extravaganza now stands at £9.35bn.

When London won the race to host the event the budget was estimated at £2.4bn.

The cost breakdown includes £5.3bn for construction work, £600m for increased security, an £840m tax bill, £390m for other costs including hosting the Paralympics, and a £2.7bn contingency fund.

The government has committed to paying £6bn – cash raised through London’s council tax and the National Lottery.

However, dipping in lottery funds has provoked a backlash from the Conservative opposition.

Shadow Olympics minister Hugh Robertson said: “If you add together all the separate parts, the budget for which the government is responsible has nearly trebled since the Olympic Bill left Parliament under a year ago.

“In raiding the lottery for a further £675m to make up the shortfall the government will penalise precisely the clubs and small organisations, up and down the country, that were supposed to benefit from the Olympics.”

English Premier League club Manchester United reported a Sports Business pre-tax profit of £30.8 million for the year ending June 2006 and CEO David Gill said the club was now poised for “dramatic revenue growth”.

Manchester United said sports Business turnover was £165.4 million for the year, against £157.2 million for the 11 months to June 2005. Pre-tax profit for the year to June 2005 was £10.8 million.

Since June 2006 the club has brought in more money from its four-year £56.5 million shirt sponsorship deal with AIG and has seen match day revenue increase with the growth in its Old Trafford stadium capacity from 68,000 to 76,000.

In addition, the latest round of three-year domestic TV deals, which start with the 2007-08 season, generated £1.7 billion in total for Sports Business Premier League clubs and could see a 65 per cent increase in Premiership TV money for every top flight club, according to Barclays Capital.

Gill said, “With sell-out crowds at the extended Old Trafford and record sports sponsorship deals like AIG, Manchester United can look forward to a Sports Business future marked by dramatic revenue growth.”
